Hautvillers, the birthplace of Champagne, is known worldwide for the presence of Dom Pierre Pérignon's tomb within its church and his undeniable role in the birth of Champagne. However, our village lacked a public space to represent Dom Pierre Pérignon. Erecting a statue in his likeness in the heart of the village: a project that has become a reality! This monumental work was erected within the grounds of Pierre Cheval Park and inaugurated on Saturday, June 11, 2022. This work by sculptor Juan Carlos Carrillo combines the "weight of history and originality." Both traditional and modern, this creation symbolizes all the sensations evoked by the name Champagne: voluptuousness, conviviality, sharing, joy, and lightness! A character, a story, a village, and an essential beverage were commemorated and honored during this colorful and surprising inauguration. The Dom Pérignon statue has become a must-see during your visit to the village: come and toast with Dom Pérignon! Simply climb up from the Marne and visit the abbey and the grave of Dom Pierre Perignon. But please do it calmly and respectfully, not like the group of proletarians this morning 🙏

Here is an unusual place! This former Formula 1 racing car circuit from the 1960s has been preserved as is. It was also used by cyclists. The Dutchman Theo Middelkamp won the road cycling world champion there on August 3, 1947. If you feel like it, come and sprint on these long asphalt straight lines. There is no longer anyone in the stands, but nothing prevents you from imagining the atmosphere then.

12월 2, 2021, Abbaye de Hautvillers
The village of Hautvillers is considered to be the birthplace of the Champenoise method. It was from this village and this abbey that Dom Pérignon improved and made champagne popular. The "holy man" is buried at the foot of the altar of the church of this magnificent abbey, which you can visit for free. You will find his tombstone easily. A few hundred meters further on, on the heights of the village, you will have an extraordinary view of the Marne valley and the town of Epernay.

The shell cellar is a unique place: not only will you taste champagnes with a subtle taste of iodine, but at the same time you will visit the beach of an exotic sea that is 55 million years old! During this period known as the Lutetian, the Champagne region was indeed a very shallow sea that looked a lot like a lagoon. This cellar has the particularity of making you discover many species of shellfish from this period perfectly preserved in the sand, including the famous Campanile Giganteum. During the cycling world championship in 1947, the street competitions took place at the Reims location (the train riders drove in Paris). Theo Middelkamp from the Netherlands won the road cycling world champion here on August 3, 1947, between the old grandstands of the Reims automobile race track that are still preserved today. Hands-on cycling history.
