10월 28, 2025, Château du Petit Geroldseck
This small castle is nowhere near as impressive as its two neighboring castles. But the climb is still worth it.

Fantastic view. Anyone attempting this should be free from vertigo. The descent is very steep and deep.

The view from the tower is excellent. The climb is definitely worth it. Be careful when climbing the stairs. At times (at window level), some steps are longer than others.

Presumably, the small and large Geroldseck were once built together. Today, remnants of the ruins can still be seen, but they are still worth seeing.

Castle after castle after castle...This one has little view, is therefore less visited and therefore much quieter than various neighboring castles. Nice, rainproof bench

The Gross-Geroldseck Castle was built on the rocky plateau that slopes down on all sides. The aim was to protect the Maursmünster Abbey. The castle was once surrounded by a strong ring wall, which can still be visited today. At the entrance to the castle you can admire the large keep, which has been preserved in its full height. In the northwest you will find a few outbuildings. In the south, however, parts of the castle are still buried under the ground and have not yet been explored.

This is more of a ruin and not necessarily an MTB highlight. The Klein-Geroldseck (also called Neu-Geroldseck) is a fortress to secure the execution of an inheritance contract with the last Geroldsecker from Groß-Geroldseck Castle.

At the Tour du Brotsch there are two shelters and when the weather is good, a beautiful meadow invites you to lie down. Already on the ascent and even more from the tower there is a wonderful view over to the Black Forest.

Since my last visit in December 2017, other parts of the castle have been restored and work continues. So there is always something new to discover.

One wonders what this huge stone trough is doing here in the middle of the forest. An attempt to explain it can be found here: https://www.indiana-stones.de/mystische-st%C3%A4tten/mystische-st%C3%A4tten-im-elsa%C3%9F/cuve-de-pierre/ Oral tradition says that the trough was commissioned by a pastor from Marmoutier Abbey. He intended to put it in his basement. However, when the work was done, the workers were no longer able to use the trough because of his Weight, so he was left in the forest From an archaeological point of view, the trough served as a water reservoir for the inhabitants of the Celtic oppidum on the Brotsch, which is dated to the Téne period (500-100 BC). On the other hand, the break marks and traces of processing are supposed to indicate a medieval technique. The secret will probably not be solved anytime soon ... "
