The place was first mentioned in documents in 1247 as "castrum", and in 1258 as "civis". In 1266 it appears as an "oppidum". Meienberg was founded by the Habsburgs and was provided with a tower and a ring wall. The town square measured around 200 metres, and had a sod well and a court linden tree. A green linden tree on a three-hilled hill is also the coat of arms of the town and office of Meienberg. Around 1300 the lords of Baldegg and Hünenberg owned the castle fief. Meienberg had neither a town ban nor a peace district, but it did have market rights and extensive grazing rights in the surrounding area. The office of Meienberg was first mentioned in 1273 and lasted until 1798. Meienberg's importance lay not in that of an urban community, but as a fixed point of power.

Originally built in the 13th century, the tower was raised to its current height of 52 metres between 1478 and 14801. The tower has served various purposes over the centuries, including as a watchtower, prison and fire alarm. Particularly noteworthy is the astronomical clock, installed in 1574. It shows not only the time, but also the phases of the moon, the day of the week and the current zodiac sign.
