Tallest military fort in Europe. The climb is long and tiring and very crowded in the months of July-August but once at the top every effort is rewarded

Early in the morning, with very little traffic, it is very enjoyable. Then it becomes impossible, cars and motorbikes everywhere. The French side is very hot in the afternoon.

Built towards the end of the nineteenth century at the behest of the then Italian Ministry of War, Fort Föens was one of the fortifications for defensive purposes in these areas. It rises between the Costans and Ferane canals, at the foot of Mount Jafferau. Currently the main building is in fair conditions of conservation and the aiming angles of the cannons are clearly visible on the terraces and on the roof of the fort.
