    Built towards the end of the nineteenth century at the behest of the then Italian Ministry of War, Fort Föens was one of the fortifications for defensive purposes in these areas. It rises between the Costans and Ferane canals, at the foot of Mount Jafferau. Currently the main building is in fair conditions of conservation and the aiming angles of the cannons are clearly visible on the terraces and on the roof of the fort.

                from Bardonecchia you go up towards the Gleise hamlet (I parked here).
                Continue along the asphalt road almost to the end, near the hairpin bend that precedes the Frejusia Basins.
                The obvious dirt road to the Foens fort starts from the hairpin bend under the Frejusia Basins. Go up the dirt road which continues eastwards up to an altitude of 2100 m, then carry out a long, slightly uphill traverse up to the Foens fort 2216 m.
                From the Foens fort you proceed on a path that reaches the crest, from here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the valley below, you can easily recognize Oulx. Continuing along the ridge you arrive at a crossroads, where you can choose whether to continue in the direction of the Galleria dei Saraceni or opt to climb up Monte Jafferau.

                  Fort Föens or Forte Foens[1] was one of the forts that beat the Conca di Bardonecchia and, in particular, the passages of the Grand'Hoche and Colle della Mullattiera. It was located on a plateau above the hamlet of Föens (from which it took its name) in the municipality of Oulx, even though at the time of construction the fort was located in the municipality of Savoulx (autonomous until 1928).
