Its origins date back to the 6th century, when the future Saint Leonard worked in the region. In 1087, William the Conqueror granted the fief of Vains to the Abbey of Saint-Étienne in Caen, which subsequently founded the priory. The building dates back to the 11th century and has been restored several times over the centuries. Today, the priory serves as a holiday accommodation.

The Routout farm in Saint-Léonard was acquired by the Conservatoire du Littoral in 1994 and, after extensive renovations, opened as the Maison de la Baie/Relais de Vains in 2001. In 2011, it evolved into the Écomusée de la Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel, incorporating content from the Maison de la Baie/Relais de Courtils. Plage de Saint-Jean-le-Thomas is a beach located in the commune of Saint-Jean-le-Thomas in the department of Manche in Normandy, France. It is the first beach of the bay that you will find if you arrive from the south, when you come from Granville and go towards Mont Saint-Michel. It has a beautiful sandy beach at high tide, and the sea retreats very far at low tide. You can enjoy a panoramic view of Mont Saint-Michel, Tombelaine and the Emerald Coast from its beaches.

This priory dates from the 2nd century but the building you see was built in the 11th century by the monks residing there. During the French Revolution, like many other religious buildings, the priory was sold to a private individual and remains a private residence to this day. The ecomuseum of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is a museum in La Manche, located in Vains. It opened in 2001 under the name Maison de la Baie. It is dedicated to the formation and life of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. Housed in an old farmhouse, a traditional farm of the bay, on the edge of the coast, it is an interpretation center on the formation and evolution of the bay, its fauna, its flora and the activities, past and present, of the men in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. The Maison de la Baie de Vains changed its name in 2011, a year after the closure of that of Courtils, to allow better identification of what this place is and what it offers. The ecomuseum is a property of the Conservatoire du Littoral developed, managed and run by the Manche Departmental Council as part of the departmental network of Manche sites and museums.
