Anyone talking about the Normandy landings can't miss St. Mere l'Eglise. Here, everything revolves around the landing of the 101st Airborne. It's a true tourist hotspot, so it can quickly become overcrowded. It's still worth a visit. There are also plenty of opportunities to take a break with a coffee and a crêpe.

Anyone interested in the Second World War can get a very interesting insight into the structure, function and life in a coastal defense battery. Tours can be taken here with an audio guide in various languages (including German). It's worth it and the entrance fee of €8 per person (as of May 2024) is absolutely fair.

It is one of the German batteries of the Atlantic Wall, the most powerful of the D-Day beaches. You can visit no fewer than 22 blockhouses and learn more about this strategic site from which the first cannon shot was fired at dawn on June 6, 1944.

This bunker system is one of the most important key positions on the D-Day of the Utah Beach section. The well-preserved bunkers with accessible underground passages make a visit to the museum an experience. Impressive is the penetration of a 356 mm shell, fired from several kilometers away from the battleship USS Nevada, which hit one of the installations and disabled them. An audio guide in various selectable languages provides important background information at the respective stations.

Because of the 210mm guns covering Utah Beach, the Saint-Marcouf Battery was of great strategic importance and thus the target of fierce attacks designed to undermine that position. Crisbecq was bombarded with hundreds of tons of bombs, which knocked out the main guns but failed to hit the casemates. On June 8, 1944, during an attack by American troops, Lieutenant Ohmsen requested Azeville's battery support to free his men from their predicament. The garrison held out until the morning of June 12. The resistance was enormous: only 78 of the more than 350 soldiers survived the fighting and were able to advance to Cherbourg. The collapsed casemate on the left was blown up by the Americans after the surrender of the German garrison, but is nevertheless impressive.

After crossing the Channel, the plane is in the Cotentin sky, but before the men have time to jump, the plane is hit by the flak. The aircraft crashes in a field near the village of Beuzeville-au-Plain, killing all of its occupants. After extinguishing the fire, the inhabitants of the village bury the remains of the American soldiers in a cemetery in Sainte-Mère-Église. On March 27, 1951, the body of Thomas Meehan was exhumed and transferred to the United States where he was reburied at the Jefferson Barracks Military Post National Cemetery in Lemay, Missouri.
