Beautiful castle and great view

The Ulmen Maar is a maar belonging to the town of Ulmen in the Eifel region of Rhineland-Palatinate. The meromictic lake is up to 37 meters deep and is surrounded by an average 20-meter-high wall of tuff rock formed from the eruptions of the former volcano.

According to legend, Heinrich von Ulmen is said to have deposited a bag of earth from Christ's grave at the St. Anthony's Cross in the 17th century.

Ulmen Castle Ruins: The few walls of the once stately Ulmen Castle tower over the steep bank of the Ulmen Maar. Only parts of the upper castle have been preserved for posterity.

According to legend, the knight Rhilipp Haust(en) von Ulmen and his wife erected the cross. The knight was taken prisoner during a crusade. According to legend, he had to pull a plough there, even though his hands and toes were chopped off. After hearing this, his wife set out to free her lover. She succeeded in doing this thanks to a harp play - and out of gratitude, both of them erected the St. Anthony's Cross on their safe return home.
