Lichtenberg Castle is 800 years of history and superb panoramas of the Northern Vosges regional natural park brought together in an exceptional setting. As you walk around, you can read through the architecture the Gothic and Renaissance imprint of the building.

This place has a lovely view over the surrounding area, has picknick benches for a proper lunch or bikepackingdinner. We even rolled out our bivi's and spend the night. TIP the cemetery provided water and we found this very convenient on our trip!

From Wikipedia https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Lichtenberg_(Alsace) The castle is surrounded by a wide, deep moat that allows access in only one place. Standing on the moat, the castle shows only high smooth walls without windows. Inside the castle complex there are terraces and meadows next to the buildings. Modern exhibition rooms are integrated in the former "western house" from the 15th and 16th centuries with its round windows, which are unusual for Alsace. The 16th-century 'arsenal of arms' has been converted into a large exhibition space and a cantilevered auditorium has been added which juts out from the old structure of the castle. From the artillery terrace of 1840 there is a wide view all around. Parts of the castle complex and all exhibition rooms are barrier-free accessible. A late Gothic castle chapel is well preserved. It was dedicated to the Trinity. A portrait of Saint Christopher was painted on the side facing the towers.[1] The chapel also served the town of Lichtenberg itself as a church, since it did not have its own.

Super nice castle, with small games for children. There is a cafe to relax in, and you can also relax in the sun loungers! Definitely worth a trip!

From the castle you have a sensational view all around. You can still see a lot in the ruin and climb the tower. There are beautiful wooden games for children in different rooms so that there is no boredom. There is also a small café and picnic facilities. Worth seeing all around!

It's been a long time since I was there last. But it was really fun to make a longer stop here as part of a castle tour. In the village below the castle, about 500 meters away, there are parking spaces and rest stops. The castle itself costs admission, but I think it's worth the price because it's a large, clean and partly beautifully restored castle complex with a fantastic view. Only the newfangled museum doesn't really fit in with the old castle complex in my opinion ;-)

In the 13th century, the Lichtenberg family had the castle of the same name built on a 400 meter high hill. The location was strategically favorable and was later expanded to make it one of the key points of the defense system of the Northern Vosges. The history of the castle was very eventful from the capture of the fortress by the troops of Louis XIV at the time of the French annexation to its bombardment by the German army in 1870. The ruins of the fortress are among the most beautiful in the region and a 16th century chapel in Gothic style adorns the complex. The marble mausoleum is one of the most beautiful from the Renaissance period in Alsace. The spiers can be reached via a huge staircase: from here you can see the top of the Strasbourg cathedral. Today u. a. exhibitions, meetings and demonstrations also take place. The castle ruins can be visited against admission, Prices : Adult rate: 6 € Child rate: € 3.5 Family (2 adults + 2 children): € 17 Student: 3.5 € (see https://www.visit.alsace/de/217002735-burg-von-lichtenberg/)

At an altitude of 480 meters above the small community of Lichtenberg in the northern Vosges, the castle ruins of the same name lie. You can visit the castle and see the changing exhibitions housed there. Or simply enjoy the beautiful view of the Vosges. Information about the castle is available (even in German) here: http://www.chateaudelichtenberg.com/index.php
