Saverne was already a Roman military post in the 4th century. From the 15th century until the French Revolution, Saverne was the residence of the powerful bishops of Strasbourg. The Château de Rohan, which boasts the longest neoclassical façade of any building in France, still bears witness to this.

Lock for ships still in operation

A little further away you can still find the old canal and locks with lock houses. I have added 2 or 3 pictures.

Here the canal bridges the Saar and a road. Interesting construction from 1881.

Saverne, the "gateway to Alsace". In the center is the Chateau des Rohan, built in 1790, with its rose garden. The legendary Maison Katz is also located in the city center. This exceptionally beautiful half-timbered house dates back to 1605 and is one of the oldest half-timbered houses in Alsace. The cloister of the former Franciscan convent is located in Rue Poincaré. The former Romanesque collegiate church Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité is the central church building in the old town of Saverne.

The chapel dedicated to Saint-Joseph is in the shape of a Greek cross. It was erected at a place called “Le Calvaire”. The first stone was laid on August 16, 1858. It was the priest-archpriest of Réchicourt who presided over the inauguration on May 27, 1866. In 1879, priest Poirine donated the chapel and the oratory to the parish. This chapel surprises the visitor with the imposing facade ending in stepped edges up to the pinnacle supporting the statue of St. Joseph. A pilgrimage is organized every year on St Joseph's Day but the breath of the past is fading.
