Interesting castle ruin with a very good view. Ideal for a small picnic. The castle was built by Henry I, King of England from 1100 to 1135.

A very pretty medieval town with old buildings and, unfortunately, many closed shops. The church of St. Julien is particularly worth a visit.

Nice walk, especially in dry weather. The last 200 meters have to go through water. But definitely do it in the summer.

10월 24, 2023, Le Tertre Sainte-Anne et la légende du dragon
If you are looking for a place that combines nature, history and legend, you can visit the mound of Sainte Anne and the legend of the Dragon, a site perched near Domfront-en-Poiraie in Normandy. According to legend, around the year 1052, a fierce dragon lived in a pit called The Dragon Pit and terrorized the region. The lord of Domfront, William II Talvas, had to sacrifice a young victim every day to appease the beast. One day, his daughter Mabile was chosen by fate and was about to be devoured by the dragon. But a mysterious old man appeared on a rock overlooking the pit and made the sign of the cross, ordering the monster to disappear forever. The dragon flew away and fell into another pit called La Fosse-Tertière, where it died. You can discover this fascinating history by following a loop trail that connects Tertre Sainte-Anne and Tertre Chapon, where you will find information panels. You can also enjoy panoramic views of the countryside and the medieval town of Domfront from the top of the hill.

Besieged by William the Conqueror in 1092, this castle has changed hands many times. The English, in 1417, occupied it during the winter months. It remained in English hands until the French recaptured it in 1450. The castle's fate was sealed when it served as a refuge for the Earl of Montgomery in 1574. He was beheaded the same year and the demolition of the castle was ordained in 1608. Witnesses to the construction of the castle, the ruins have stood the test of time and are still there today for you to enjoy.

70 meters deep, this gorge has many attractions. On the heights, you will find a superb panorama as well as a Calvary marking the highest point of the ridge. In the rocks, two legendary caves symbolize the chambers of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, hence the name Arthur Pit (Arthur). Below, the river having dug the gorge, the Sonce, is transformed into a waterfall. An artificial pond that was created to regulate the flow is also nearby. Not to mention the inn on the site, ideal for regaining strength after strolling around the site: https://aubergedelafossearthour.com/

At the top of the castle plateau you can enjoy the wide view of the surroundings. Early in the morning there are no tourists in town, then it is nice and quiet and the narrow streets smell of fresh croixssants.

Among the many legends that animate the Mortainais, we share one with our Breton neighbors: those of the Arthurian myth. Because it is here, at the Fosse Arthour, that King Arthur and his wife Guinevere would rest. Two places in particular, on either side of the Sonce river, tell us this story. According to Arthurian legend, and as the Normans tell it, Arthur and Guinevere decided to retire to the region, to live their last days, each living on his own, in caves still visible today. However, Arthur was not allowed to visit the queen other than at sunset. But Arthur could not bring himself to do so and died when he fell into the ravine, precipitated by the genius of the Pit. Guinevere's Room is across the river. Unlike Arthur's, the cave is still visible. Legend has it that after Arthur fell over the precipice, Guinevere threw herself into it. Around the year 1052 near this place called "The Dragon Pit" legend reports that at the time of William II Talvas, lord of Domfront and successor to Robert de Bellême, there lived a ferocious dragon who sowed terror in the region. Teutates, an old soothsayer living as a hermit in the Andaines Forest, not far from it, suggested to the lord to bring each day a young victim aged ten to twenty years old, chosen at random from among the population, in order to appease the anger of the dragon. Only one day, chance fell upon William II Talvas since his daughter, Mabile, was chosen by fate. The unfortunate child therefore had to prepare for the sacrifice. Fortunately, this one had the protection of the heavens. At the very moment when the procession reached the summit of Tertre Sainte Anne, the appearance of a tall old man on the rock dominating the “Dragon Pit” interrupted the sad ascent. The old man, using prayers, made a large sign of the cross demanding the monster to disappear forever. The dragon, roaring, emerged from the Pit and launched itself into the air. However, his heavy wings could no longer support him, so he fell into the Varenne, where his fall dug a bottomless chasm called "La Fosse-Tertière".
