Here is the route for the ascent of the Col d'Ayen starting from Saint-Clair, via the legendary road through the Verdon Gorges!

We were here in mid-July and were lucky enough to experience the approximately 100-year-old distillery in action! The aroma when you get out of the car is incredibly intense! At the distillery, different generations meet and work together; a young man patiently demonstrates and explains everything.

A magnificent view that embraces the lake

The flat southern part of the Plateau de Valensole is the most important lavender growing area in Provence. It is bordered by the Durance, Verdon and Asse rivers. In June and July, the area between Puimoisson and St-Jurs is a sea of purple. Valensole, the center of the plateau, is famous for its lavender honey.

As you cycle through the sun-drenched Provençal countryside, you’ll discover the enchanting lavender fields of Valensole. This picturesque village is surrounded by vast fields of purple flowers, creating a breathtaking spectacle that will leave you speechless. As you cycle through the fragrant landscape, you’ll have the chance to witness the mesmerizing dance of bees as they collect pollen from the delicate lavender flowers. Be sure to visit a local distillery and learn about the traditional process of extracting lavender oil.

The route is breathtakingly beautiful and the climb is pleasant to ride. At the beginning of October, when many campsites are already closed, there is not much traffic.

The Sainte-Croix bridge, or Galetas bridge, spans the Verdon River at the exit of the gorges. Here you have a breathtaking view of the gorges, as well as the Sainte-Croix lake.
