The Lock Keepers' Valley is an 8.5-kilometer-long cycle path along the Marne-Rhine Canal. It is dotted with 17 locks, now unused, which once allowed visitors to cross the threshold of the Vosges Mountains. They were replaced by the Arzviller boat lift. The small lock-keepers' houses with their pinkish plasterwork and the somewhat wild nature make the area particularly bucolic.

It is hard to imagine that there was an important Benedictine abbey in this small town. Sigebaud, Bishop of Metz, had it built in 723. Her patron saint was St. Gangolph. In 1160 Hildegard von Bingen stayed in Graufthal. It was destroyed during the Peasants' War in 1525 and then the stones were used to build the church and some houses.
