Each of these crosses that the biker encounters in the villages or in the fields is a sign of remembrance of the crucifixion, but also of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. "Here on earth there is His memory, but in the kingdom of heaven there is His presence: this presence is the joy of those who have already reached salvation. The memory is our consolation, as we are still wanderers, traveling towards our homeland." (Bernard of Clairvaux)

The aqueduct connecting Gorze to Metz is a Roman aqueduct built at the beginning of the second century. Divodurum (Metz) is the capital of the Mediomatris, at the crossroads of the south-north and east-west axes, i.e. on the Roman roads from Lyon to Trier and from Reims to Strasbourg. The city, which had about 20,000 inhabitants in the second century, needed a supply of spring water to supply the fountains, the three Roman baths, the public latrines and the craftsmen. The exact distribution points are not known because no trace remains (Wikipedia).

Symbolic fortress of the Dukes of Lorraine, the name of this castle has become the war cry of the princes "Prény! Prény!". Dominating the Moselle valley from its spur, the castle benefits from a large enclosure around the lower courtyard in which the village developed and the eastern small, isolated from the village by a large ditch, and which constitutes the largest part. strongest on the site. This place constitutes one of the northern locks of the Dukes of Lorraine, in a region largely held by the Counts of Bar who particularly enjoy the neighboring castle of Mousson. Undoubtedly built in the 12th century to guard the abbey of Sainte-Marie-aux-Bois, the Dukes of Lorraine remain attorneys of this religious establishment. The warmand keep or tower constitutes the most impressive element of this castle with its pentagonal shape, its thick walls and its great height.

This impressive aqueduct is emblematic of the region. It was built at the beginning of the 2nd century and had the function of transporting drinking water from the source of "bouillons de Gorze" to the thermal baths and the fountain of Metz, formerly Divodorum. The aqueduct was 22 kilometers long at its origin. It spanned the Moselle valley for more than a kilometer. Today, there are 16 arches that can be seen on this site in Jouy-aux-Arches and 7 arches on the side of Ars-sur-Moselle.

Starting and finishing point for many mountain bike outings, the Saint-Clément cross is also a legendary place since Clément, coming from Rome, would have stopped there and kneeling in front of Metz, would have marked the rock with his knees. . He needed at least this strength to defeat the famous Dragon Graouilly, symbol of pre-Christian beliefs to be destroyed. If the dragon is dead, its legend lives on and is still alive in Metz today.

Hello, one more thing about the connection: from Koblenz you can easily take the train to Luxembourg, from where you can continue every hour to Nancy or Metz.

Hello, In my opinion the most beautiful part of the Moselle runs from Nancy via Metz to Trier, if necessary you can then continue to Koblenz, but that will be a good 400 km if you do all the Moselle loops. The appeal of the French part is that you almost always have a good cycle path (usually with a good surface), you are often far away from a road and with Metz and Nancy you have two of the most interesting French cities of all. Metz has a well-equipped campsite on a branch of the Moselle, you are less than 500 m from the cathedral or the old town. You should watch out for westerly winds on the tour, otherwise the path along the canal to Thionville can be very tough, a SW wind is even better. Trier also has a good campsite, and you can also walk into the city. Then off you go, chain on the right.
