The moated castle was built in the 10th century as a Saxon border fortress against the Wends, presumably on the site of a Slavic hillfort in the Milde marshland. A nunnery founded under its protection, which the Obotrites destroyed in 983, existed here until 1121. The castle belonged to the four Altmark burgwarden (fortified districts), which administered the sovereign's judicial and military districts, along with Tangermünde Castle, Osterburg Castle, and Arneburg Castle. These protected the Frankish-colonized territory and the missionary monasteries between the Elbe and Milde rivers. Source: Wikipedia

The Salzwedel Tourist Information Center is located in the historic town hall tower and is the central point of contact for visitors to the Hanseatic city. It offers information on sights, city tours, events, and accommodations, as well as brochures, maps, souvenirs, and tickets. A special experience is climbing the town hall tower, which offers a panoramic view of the city.

Salzwedel's town center is characterized by well-preserved brick Gothic architecture, picturesque half-timbered houses, and remnants of the old city wall with gates such as the Neuperver Tor. The focal point is the area around the town hall tower and the modern "Hanse-Welle" water feature, where cafés and shops invite you to linger. Around the center, the alleys of the old town are ideal for exploring by bike, allowing you to combine culture with exercise. In addition to the historic flair, institutions such as the Mönchskirche (Monks' Church), a concert and exhibition hall, and the Danneil Museum invite you to discover the town's history. This makes Salzwedel an ideal destination for a bike tour with a worthwhile stop at the Town Hall Square.
