Just cracked the 1000m above sea level. The first of several passes on my stage today with 2,500m of elevation. Pedal up slowly and enjoy the peace and quiet. There are very few cars here

One of the larger towns in the sparsely populated region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. There is a lovely shopping street with lively shops and small cafes

Located in the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park, at the confluence of the Bienne and the Tacon, in a beautiful mountain setting, the town of Saint-Claude is famous for its crafts and especially for its briarwood tobacco pipe production. The Museum of the Pipe and the Diamond exhibits tobacco pipes, diamonds and precious stones.

This imposing sculpture which sometimes smokes, is in front of the museum of the pipe and the diamond of Saint-Claude. The inhabitants of this town, like many others in the Jura, sculpted diamonds and pipes during the long winter months to earn additional income. Modernization coming from this custom has become industry.
