The Etang Saint-Ladre Nature Reserve in Boves is located near Amiens, in the Avre Valley, a tributary of the Somme River. In 1979, it became the first site in Picardy to be designated a state-owned nature reserve. The ecological management implemented since the 1990s has allowed the development of a complex mosaic of habitats, among the most representative of alkaline peatland systems, supporting characteristic, and often heritage, flora and fauna. The Frize mountain belvedere reveals a striking view of the meanders of the Somme, in a peaceful setting that contrasts with its past marked by the battles of the First World War. Traces of this history are still visible in the trenches and shell impacts. Mentioned by Blaise Cendrars, this land rich in history today offers visitors an exceptional panorama of a landscape of marshes and ponds.

As a memorial to the endless number of war dead, such a “Cimetiere militaire” – in German they are usually referred to as a “war cemetery” or “soldiers' cemetery” – is still very important today. “Now you, Lord, let your servant depart in peace, as you said...” it says in the so-called “Song of Simeon” (Gospel of Luke chapter 2, verse 29). However, the many people buried here by no means died in peace, but rather became victims of war and an inhumane tyranny. The most important and at the same time enduring function of military or honorary cemeteries or war cemeteries is to keep the memory of this suffering alive and - every generation anew (!) - to remind us of the lasting preservation of peace.

This old towpath offers beautiful views and a relaxing calm. There are no more draft horses there as in the past, but only a few cyclists and barges.

The South African National Memorial at Delville Wood is a First World War memorial located on the territory of the municipality of Longueval, in the Somme department. It commemorates the engagement of South African troops during the Great War. A commemorative museum traces the history of South Africa's participation in World War I, World War II and the various conflicts of the Cold War. The British Military Cemetery at Delville Wood is located opposite the memorial. Delville Wood represents, for South Africans, the place where South African Union soldiers were first engaged on the Western Front. On July 14, 1916, the South African brigade, made up of four battalions, about 3,150 men, had been ordered to hold its positions "at all costs". Under the incessant fire of the enemy artillery, they had resisted and known a true hell (Delville wood will be renamed Devil wood, the wood of the Devil). When they were relieved on July 20, they left 1,080 of theirs, killed or missing, and 1,735 wounded. Wikipedia

The place was in the Franco-Prussian War on 27./28. November 1870 scene of heavy fighting during the Battle of Amiens (1870). During the First World War, on April 24, 1918, there were battles between British and German tank units as part of the German spring offensive. On August 8, 1918, the "black day of the German Army", allied, in particular Australian and Canadian units, broke through the German lines in the vicinity of Amiens. The Australian National Memorial, inaugurated by King George VI on July 22, 1938, as well as several monuments, military cemeteries and the Musée du soldat australien commemorate the war dead.
