The old town of Sempach still has two old city gates, although this is the more striking one.

Great monument right next to the church in Sempach

The construction history of the Lucerne Gate remains largely obscure. However, it can be assumed that the tower-like gate was not part of the original city fortifications. Originally (13th century), the gate was probably constructed from ashlars and approximately 7.5 meters high, upon which the central tower was later built. It was divided by ceilings, accessed via stairs, and had a pent roof. The latter was replaced by a pyramid roof in the first half of the 17th century. Even later, in the late 18th and early 20th centuries, the wall enclosing the tower on the north side was added, along with the facade paintings. On the city street near St. Stephen's Church, a round column stands on a square base, topped by a seated lion. The column has a circular inscription at the top and bottom; two sides of the base each have two carved coats of arms, and the other sides have an inscription. Information panel next to the column. Great old town right on the lake, definitely worth a visit!

The Lion or National Monument was erected to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Sempach in honor of Petermann von Gundoldingen and Winkelried (completed in 1888). Sempach still has two city gates. The beautiful Lucerne Gate is one of them. Unfortunately, its history is largely unknown. The lower "solid" third is older. The upper tower was built later.
