In 2005, the griffon vulture was reintroduced here in the Gorges du Verdon. And with success, because after a centuries-long absence, they are now nesting against the steep rock walls again. With a bit of luck, you'll have ample opportunity to admire them if you drive the Route des Crêtes on the north side of the gorge. Griffon vultures are social creatures that live in groups and remain monogamous throughout their lives. They can grow to 95 to 110 centimeters in length, and their wingspan is between 2.4 and 2.8 meters. Although they appear to glide slowly through the air, they can actually reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. Because they barely move their wings and utilize air currents, they can easily cover long distances. It's even possible for a flock to fly from Southern Europe to our country within a few days, searching for food. In the Gorges du Verdon region, you're most likely to see them between Le-Palud-sur-Verdon and Rougon, although they do occasionally venture out. Spring is the best time, as they nest in the rock walls. The young fledge for the first time in midsummer.

You shouldn't have a problem with it being dark, cold and narrow; the tunnel is long and really tough, as there's a lot of water in it.
