When Appenzell's most prominent peak, the Säntis, is not shrouded in clouds, the panorama of the Alpstein massif is magnificent.

Of beautiful and wild New Year's Eve gnomes On December 31st and January 13th, strange figures wander through the hinterland of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Some wear decorated hats, others have terrible animal faces. They are "New Year's Eve gnomes" who ring in the old year and welcome the new one. The "New Year's Eve gnomes" in Urnäsch and the surrounding area are, alongside the Alpfahrt, one of the Appenzell customs known throughout Switzerland. The custom draws its fascination from the unique combination of opposites such as nature and art, mystery and tradition, and harmony and anarchy.
