From the Pont d'Espagne, there are three options for reaching Lake Gaube. Either a wide path that's rather uninteresting except for the fact that it's free of large rocks, so it's passable, I'd say. If it were allowed, a sedan could use it. Or the cable car, or finally this GR (Grade 1) with its rocky terrain. This GR (Grade 1) is sometimes steep, and the natural steps made up of rocks are sometimes high. You need a certain level of fitness and stable footing to climb or descend it easily and safely. If this is your case, this is the most beautiful route to reach Lake Gaube, and it will be a splendid reward.

For the first 20 kilometers, the climb is gentle, crossing the picturesque landscapes of the Gavarnie cirque. Then once you reach the town of Gavarnie, the real climb begins, with much steeper gradients that can exceed 10%, reaching an altitude of 2,200 meters.

Pont d'Espagne is a spectacular place in the Pyrenees that stands out for its wild waterfalls and thick forest. It is the starting point for many walking excursions that delve into a very virgin and wild area of the central Pyrenees. The climb to Pont d'Espagne starting from Pierrefitte-Nestalas (Argelès-Gazost valley) has 2 distinct parts: (1) to Cauterets, it is a very busy road with hardly any shoulder, especially in the initial part. The asphalt is perfect and hardly presents any considerable hardness, except for 1 km at 8% and some ramps at 10% when there are still 5 km to Cauterets. The first part passes through a narrow valley with hardly any view, while the final part allows you to contemplate the beauty of the Cauterets valley. (2) from Cauterets to Pont d'Espagne there are 5.5 km with an average of 8.2% and several areas at 10%. You cross a dense forest, where the road plays with a large waterfall through beautiful, tough horseshoe curves and wonderful bridges. A show not to be missed.

The 19km to Gavarnie are easy and on foot, 705 meters in altitude. The next 10 kilometers are tough and grueling with about 830 meters of elevation gain. Moreover, you go above 2000m, which also makes it more difficult.
