In Masserberg, there is a viewing point overlooking the upper lake of the Goldisthal pumped-storage power plant, which was built on a hilltop. This is what a giant battery looks like. The operator writes about it: "The Goldisthal pumped-storage power plant is the largest pumped-storage power plant in Germany. It has been in operation since 2004. It is located in the western Thuringian Slate Mountains on the Schwarza River. The cavern power plant has an installed capacity of 1,060 megawatts (MW). It is still one of the largest and most modern power plants of its kind in Europe. The upper reservoir has a capacity of 13 million cubic meters of working water, sufficient for approximately nine hours of full-load turbine operation. The power plant takes about 100 seconds to go from standstill to full capacity (1,060 MW). Its rapid availability makes it an important component of the energy transition, as it can respond quickly to the highly fluctuating feed-in of renewable energies.
