Originally built in 1967 by the German Red Cross (DRK), the hut now serves as an event venue, a rest stop for hikers, and accommodation. With its income and fundraising campaigns, the association supports social projects in the spirit of Albert Schweitzer, particularly the jungle hospital he founded in Lambarene, Gabon. The Albert Schweitzer Hut in Altenfeld is an idyllic meeting place for hikers, nature lovers, and groups. Originally built by the Altenfeld Mountain Rescue Service as a refuge and training center, it was later modernized. Since 2002, it has been operated by the Albert Schweitzer Hut Association, which oversees the building's maintenance, environmental protection, and social projects. Here, you can enjoy a cozy atmosphere—with sleeping space for up to 24 people, a fully equipped kitchen, and a barbecue area and fire pit, providing the perfect setting for convivial evenings.
