The obelisk itself was destroyed in 1923, after the Irish Civil War, but the bridge still retains a link to its history. The monument, also known as King William's Obelisk, was built to commemorate William of Orange's victory at the Battle of the Boyne over King James II.

Fans of Game of Thrones will recognise the currachs used by Boyne's Boats for tours of the area. They are traditional wooden boats and feature frequently in many seasons, built by Ross from Boyne's Boats.
