The tranquil waterside village of Cloondara in County Longford overlooks the impressive, stone-cut Richmond Harbour. This is where the Royal Canal meets with the mighty River Shannon having journeyed across Ireland from Dublin – an ideal spot to start or finish an adventure along the Royal Canal Way.

Pake Bridge is one of the many arched stone bridges built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries when the Royal Canal was first constructed. Like others along the route, it was designed to let horses tow barges beneath while carts and livestock crossed above. Today it’s a quiet spot to pause, with a bench beside the bridge that makes it perfect for a break.

If you fancy a rest in some peaceful woods or perhaps to extend your ride on off road track then head into Newcastle woods off of the road here. Once part of the Newcastle Demense, owned by the King-Harman family, Newcastle Woods is a wonderful place to hike and connect with nature. As you walk through the peaceful woodland, keep a careful eye out for Pine Martens who are resident here.

The royal canal ends in this tranquil village into a beautiful cut-stone Richmond harbour. Here there are a number of pubs to have a bite to eat and admire the view.

At the eastern edge of Lough Gowna in Derrycassan Woods you can get right up close to the water. It is a nice place to pause a while with views over to Inchmore Island / Inis Mór (Big Island). The ruins of a 6th century abbey can be found on the island and it was still used as a cemetery for locals until the early 20th century.

There are lots of trails to explore in Derrycassan Woods. It is a particularly great place for running due to the flat and well maintained paths as well as the mobile coffee van that is often parked here too.

Mosstown Harbour is close to where Mosstown House and Mill once stood. The former was demolished in the 1960s and the latter ruined by fire in 1912.
