Fort de la Pompelle – Shield of Reims Built between 1880 and 1883 as part of the defensive belt around Reims, this fort saw fierce fighting during the First World War. After a brief German occupation in September 1914, it was retaken by French troops and played a key role in the defence of the city. More than 180 regiments, including Russian brigades, defended the fort against repeated attacks, including a tank battle in June 1918. Today, the fort houses a museum with unique collections, including an impressive array of German helmets and soldiers’ personal items – a tangible reminder of the horror and courage of the Great War.

This partly concreted path allows you to climb the Béru hill. During the ascent, you will be able to observe the vines of local winegrowers.

In order to access Fort de la Pomelle, you have to pass under the national road through the concrete conduits at eye level, this can only be done with your bike.

This beautiful Romanesque church is located at the crossroads between two rolling streets, a small square accompanies this ensemble, with its commemorative monument.

Located at the top of a hill, the fort served as a strategic base during the 14-18 war, in collaboration with the 1st and 3rd Russian legions, the French defense made it possible to repel enemy attacks. This line is materialized by stone sculptures. The fort is visited from Tuesday to Sunday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. You can nevertheless go around the fort on foot or by bike, some pleasant descents will get the adrenaline pumping for mountain bikers. By moving a little further from the fort, you can admire a clear view of the city of Reims and the Marne vineyards.
