The following legend is still told today: A priest once let a dove fly with a silver bell. It was supposed to determine the location of the castle by choosing its resting place. The dove settled on an oak tree on the banks of the Saale. When the tree was felled, a swarm of bees flew high into the air from the trunk. This is how the name is said to have come about. The castle was rebuilt around 1300, the remains of which are the current castle ruins. At the end of the 14th century, Saalfeld was sold to Margrave Friedrich IV of Meissen and the district administrators of the Saxon administration moved in. They were the highest officials of the administrative district and were responsible for the military, justice, finances and goods. 200 years later, the castle lost its function as a defensive structure. The city council briefly took possession of the ruined castle. The roof and the half facing the city were dismantled to obtain building materials for the ongoing repair of the Saale bridge. In 1208, the Counts of Schwarzburg received the former imperial city of Saalfeld as a pledge. The tower castle Hoher Schwarm was hardly used as a residence, however; it was the home of the castle guards, members of the lower nobility, whose job it was to ensure law and order.
