The historic vineyards of Hautvillers are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Hillsides, Houses, and Cellars of Champagne. Its 408-hectare national forest, a veritable promontory overlooking the Champagne vineyards, plays a structuring role in the landscape, which must be preserved and guaranteed over time. We had to cross the main road in a rather adventurous way, as we had previously taken a different turn in the forest. It would have been better to stay on the route in the forest and walk towards the town.

Henri Martin, former mayor of Hautvillers in 1934, was born in the village in 1903 and became an influential politician in the region. He died during deportation on 9 May 1945 in the Mauthausen camp in Austria. The beautifully carved monument to Henri Martin stands on the Place de la République and is a feast for the eyes.
