I enjoyed this walk so much. Starting at Benfleet I walked up onto Benfleet Downs and Hadleigh Castle Country Park, with views down onto the marshes, Hadleigh Ray, and Canvey Island below. The weather was just right, not too cold, with some beautiful distant sunrays. After Hadleigh Castle, an evocative ancient ruin, I descended to Hadleigh Marsh, a long tidal flat that's a birdwatcher's dream. A quick detour to Two Tree Island, a former rubbish dump now nature reserve, where you can see all the way out to the Thames estuary. Then to Old Leigh, a fishing village that's somehow survived the expansion of Southend-on-Sea, with plenty of pubs, cockle sheds, and fresh fish to eat. I can't wait to go back and do this again in Spring or Summer, it was a great experience. Happy birthday to me.

I very much recommend the Canvey Island circular walk from Benfleet on a sunny day, whatever the season.

I had a day off and was keen to get some mud on my boots. Early on I thought I'd made a mistake because it was relentlessly drizzly and cold, but I persevered and the weather cleared up the tiniest bit so I was glad I did. This is a really nice route through the Weald, taking in Marden Park and Gravelly Hill woods, Happy Valley, and Farthing Downs; partly the North Downs Way, partly the London Loop. A stop at The Harrow for a pint and a little detour to see the Chaldon Mural, lots of animals, and lots of mud.

(NB: Some important info at the end!) This is one of my favourite sections of the Loop, with Trent Park, Enfield Chase, Turkey Brook, and Forty Hall. It's very rural and very beautiful. I'd always planned to walk it again, and was thinking of next Summer but it was such a nice day that I decided to see it in a different season. Very glad I did, because it was stunning Autumn display of colours all the way along. Near the end the farmers market was on at Forty Hall Farm which was an unexpected treat. I look forward to walking this again many times in the future to see how the Enfield Chase reforesting is coming on. IMPORTANT INFO: The Loop maps (on Inner London Ramblers) are out of date! After Rectory Farm Road the maps say the Enfield Greenways is a dead end, and to head up to Strayfield Road. This is NOT TRUE! The Greenway was extended recently, and is fully signposted as being part of the Loop. So take this way, it's very beautiful and will save you time!

Starting in Staines, across the Staines Moors (which contained a lot more cows than I would have expected). From there, throught some weirdly adjacent to Heathrow. Then through the Heathrow Biodiversity Area, which I belielive primarily exists so a plane taking off crashing just after landing doesn't kill too many people. Past that, more nature including a lovely bit on a hilltop called the Keyhole, which has stone blocks from the original Waterloo Bridge. Then back into suburbia, including a widely random cemetary with some over-the-top monuments. Finally up to West Drayton station. Final stop a pub by the station for a few pints. Good day out for a group hike.

I met up with a few hiking friends from Komoot bright and early at Vauxhall Station, and together we caught the train to Staines to begin our adventure. From the station, we made our way through Staines Moor, a surprisingly wild stretch of land where cows grazed freely against a backdrop of open skies and the gentle sound of the River Colne. The route took us through peaceful countryside trails and across wooden footbridges, passing into Stanwell Moor and along sections of the Colne Valley Path, where the river meandered quietly beside us. We even stumbled upon The Keyhole, a quirky and unexpected discovery that added a nice sense of mystery to the journey. As we walked, planes roared overhead on their approach to Heathrow, a constant reminder of how close we were to one of the world’s busiest airports, yet still surrounded by calm and green spaces. After just over four hours of steady walking and good conversation, we arrived in West Drayton, where we rounded off the day with a few cheeky pints at a cosy pub just around the corner from the station. It was the perfect end to a wonderful hike, with great weather, great company and a route full of character and small surprises along the way.

Unexpectedly lovely in the early stages, across Staines, Stanwell, and Harmondsworth Moors and the Heathrow Biodiversity Site, following the rivers of the Colne Valley with constant flights overhead. Less enamoured with West Drayton and its petty xenophobia.

I walked a longer version of this a few weeks ago and decided to walk a shorter route with my wife with a stop at a pub for a Sunday roast. Started out through Peckham Rye (passing by The Clock House because it was too early), beautifully ablaze with Autumn colours, and making for The Ivy House instead. But they only accept bookings, to avoid food waste; a worthy policy, but disappointing for us. Instead we went through Nunhead Cemetery to The Earl of Derby. But they were full. So instead, twice denied, we walked to Queens Road Peckham and caught the bus home, where we had a sandwich instead.

We were rejected by the Ivy House but found space in the Waverley Arms in the end!
