    “Hoveheim” was first mentioned as a town under the Carolingians in the 8th century. As a central transport hub and core point of Christianization in the region, Hofheim had an important place in the Haßberge from the beginning. This gave the community its own seal, market rights and a city court as early as 1385. Interspersed with historic walls and monuments, the townscape of Hofheim still bears witness to its lively history.

        Hofheim is the center of the western Haßberge. The city is about 25 kilometers northeast of Schweinfurt.

        As part of the Bavarian regional reform, the royal district office, which was created in 1900 and had been known as the Hofheim district in Main Franconia since 1938 and was called the Hofheim district in Lower Franconia after the war, was dissolved on July 1, 1972. This meant that Hofheim lost its importance, as Haßfurt became the district town of the new Haßberge district.

        The railway connection to Haßfurt was closed in 1995; The tracks were dismantled in 1996/97 and converted into a 15 kilometer long cycle path.

        In the 1990s and 2000s, the number of vacant buildings in Hofheim's city center increased. In order to stop the associated decline of village structures, the municipality has not designated any new development areas since 2006. It is also actively involved in the preservation of old buildings: the municipality records all unoccupied buildings, markets them on a website and provides guidance when applying for funding. In 2008, the city of Hofheim and six neighboring communities founded the Hofheimer Land community alliance, which also aims to attract young families to live in Hofheim or the surrounding villages and thus reduce the population decline.
