The carillon was donated to commemorate the city's 800th anniversary in 1980. It can be heard daily at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. During the winter months until March 1, the figures do not emerge. From the Königsberg Christmas Market (the second Sunday in December) until January 6, Christmas and winter carols are played at 5:30 p.m.

Four figures emerge to appropriate melodies, which are described in more detail below.

Prelude: Chorale by Wolfgang Carl Briegel

Wolfgang Carl Briegel (1626-1712), born in Haus Markt No. 2, was court music director in Darmstadt in the second half of his life. In addition to numerous hymns, he wrote the hymn book “The Great Darmstadt Cantional” in 1687. The important Baroque composer had an early influence on Protestant church music.
