The Mönchsberg rises steeply above the surrounding city and at the top is one of Salzburg's greatest sights. The Hohensalzburg Fortress can be seen from far away and is a real tourist magnet as the largest completely preserved castle in Central Europe. You can climb up to the castle or use the fortress railway. The castle is open all year round and offers you an impressive insight into its history. As you stroll through the massive fortress, an audio guide will explain the most important facts to you.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is not only the highlight of excursions in the city, but also as a vantage point. Since the start of construction in 1077, the fortress has towered high above the city on the fortress hill. However, the imposing building in its current form was not completed until 1500. This is a sign of how long it took to build and develop such a fortress.

In addition to many rooms that you can still admire in their original splendor today, you can enjoy the fantastic view of Salzburg (day and night) and get exciting insights into former court life in various museums. If you visit Salzburg, you should not miss the heart of the city - especially in winter.
