In 1606, Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had the palace built outside the then city walls for his secret lover, Salome Alt. Later, it was incorporated into the expanded city wall, and numerous subsequent archbishops chose the palace as their residence. Today, the building houses the city administration, but the magnificent garden and the impressive Marble Hall are open to visitors.

The Marble Hall is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The park can be visited daily from 6 a.m. until dusk. Admission to both the park and the palace is free.

The Mirabell Palace in Salzburg's Old Town in Austria is one of the city's most famous tourist destinations due to its gardens.
The entire complex with all outbuildings and horticultural monuments is a listed building and belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Center of Salzburg. The interiors are largely used by the Salzburg City Council; The State Hall (Marble Hall) serves as a concert and wedding hall and as the latter is often used by international guests.

In 1606, Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had the "Altenau" castle built for his lover Salome Alt and their children. After his death, his successor Markus Sitticus von Hohenems renamed it "Mirabell" castle (from the Italian mirabile "admirable" and bella "beautiful"). At that time, Mirabell Castle was located outside the city walls of Salzburg. It was only when Prince Archbishop Paris von Lodron had the fortifications and a new city wall built that Mirabell Castle and the Mirabell Gardens became part of the city of Salzburg.

From 1721 to 1727, Prince Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach had Mirabell Castle converted into a magnificent baroque palace complex by the well-known baroque architect Lukas von Hildebrandt.
