The Treseburg is one of numerous Bodetal castles that served to secure the old trade routes and were intended to offer protection to the metallurgical industry based there. We know that, not much more. Hardly any documentary data, hardly any mentions - built and destroyed by unknown persons. Just like her sister, the Schöneburg near Altenbrak.

Based on its architecture, it can be assumed that the Treseburg was built around the year 965. At that time and also in the centuries that followed, the Halberstadt Bishopric held fiefdom in this region. But to deduce from this that the bishops of Halberstadt were the builders is speculation. The Treseburg is also mentioned in 1088 in the Saxon Wars of Heinrich IV.

It is said to have been destroyed in the peasant wars around 1525. It is said that the Treseburgers then built their houses from the remains of the castle and named their place in memory of Treseburg Castle. The castle is situated on a narrow, 324 meter high rock ledge, which is surrounded in a loop to the east, west and south by the Bode. At around 45 x 100 meters, the entire castle complex was not one of the smallest. The keep with a diameter of about 10 meters was also well defended.

What is certain is that when Merian visited the Harz mountains in the middle of the 17th century, the Birkenfeld and Schöneburg castles above were already in ruins and it can be assumed that Treseburg was no different.

A climb to the rock outcrop of the Treseburg is possible and also recommended. The paths are easy to walk on and in addition to the remains of the castle, two viewpoints reward the hiker with attractive views of Treseburg and the Bodetal.
