              Guimarães Castle is the most important medieval castle in the municipality of Guimarães. It was built in the 10th century on the orders of Mumadona Dias to protect the monastery from attacks by Moors and Norsemen. It has been classified as a national monument since 1881. Of course, if you're in the area you have to go there.

                The castle is inextricably linked to the military history of the young kingdom. In 1127, Afonso Henrique fought numerous battles against his cousin Afonso VII, King of Aragon, whom he no longer wanted to recognize as his vassal. The castle also contains the sacrifice of the valet, Egas Moniz. He had pledged his word to the Duke, who, after realizing that he would not be able to withstand Afonso VII's siege, had promised to be his vassal. However, when Henrique realized that the battle would still end in his favor, he broke his promise.

                Up until the end of the 14th century, the castle of Guimarães was the scene of heroic battles in defense of the young kingdom. All too often, its independence had been shaken to the core by dynastic disputes with Castile.

                In the age of modern artillery, the importance of the castle, like that of so many others, declined. Left to decay by time and human ignorance, many centuries passed before it was restored to its original size and beauty at the beginning of the 20th century.

                  Guimarães Castle is the most visited medieval castle in Portugal and one of the most beautiful and important castles in the country. It has been recognized as a National Monument since 1881, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, and one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal since 2007!

                        The complex promises more from the outside than one expects inside.
                        There's not much to see inside the castle.
                        There are the old outer walls, which you can walk around completely. But that's it.
                        I would have appreciated some explanations and texts.
                        The view from the outside is a must, but the tour doesn't offer much more.
