The Torre de Guzmán was built in Conil by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán between the years 1300 and 1307. In 1411 it was then strengthened again. The tower was intended to prevent Conil's enemies from invading the city of Conil de la Frontera. The Torre de Guzmán, along with many other towers also built by de Guzmán, forms a long line of defense along the Costa de la Luz. Among the enemies of the coasts of Cádiz were pirates and barbarians. At the time the tower was built, Conil was briefly renamed Torre Guzmán. Due to tuna fishing, Conil was particularly threatened by invaders, as Conil represented a strategically important point for anglers due to the tuna movements from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.

The tower was built in the Gothic style and is now part of the coat of arms of Conil.
