Mårup Kirke in Lønstrup was a Romanesque church that impressively demonstrated that the forces of nature can only very rarely be stopped. Unfortunately, the church no longer exists.
The anchor in the foreground comes from a British frigate that ran aground on the coast there. Unfortunately, it is no longer there either.
Excerpt from a Danish website (original text):
“The ship's anchor comes from the English frigate "The Crescent", which was on its way to Gothenburg with supplies for the English fleet when it ran aground off Mårup in December 1808 and was shipwrecked. The 226 dead are buried in a communal grave in Maarup churchyard. 7 officers and 55 sailors survived.”
Parts of the church, such as graves in the cemetery, fell into the depths due to its proximity to the cliffs. Since it was expected that it would be completely lost, it was not particularly protected. Parts of the interior are now on display in Lønstrup and in museums.
