On the steep ridge of the Chestenberg between the Brunegg and Wildegg castles, a small plateau is separated by two ditches 20-30 meters wide and 5 meters deep. The protected area is no more than 10 x 50 meters and is far away from springs and farmland. Nevertheless, the protection offered by this remote place was so important in various eras that it outweighed the inconvenience of living up here.
This unusual place must be imagined to have been inhabited, especially in the late Bronze Age, around 1050-850 BC, and in the early Iron Age (Hallstatt period) around 700-500 BC. During archaeological excavations in the 1950s, several house plans were uncovered. They belonged to a development with small houses that were only 15-20 square meters in size.
Millstones, jewelry, bronze and iron weapons, tools and, above all, the more than 13,000 ceramic shards excavated by archaeologists clearly show that people lived here for decades and that it was not just a place of refuge that was visited in times of war.
