The buildings of the "artists' colony" on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt are among the most important monuments of the Art Nouveau period! Mathildenhöhe is currently on the (hopefully successful) path to UNESCO World Heritage.

The Darmstadt Artists' Colony was, on the one hand, a group of artists, largely financed by patrons, who worked together between 1899 and 1914 - ideally with the same artistic views. On the other hand, the term also refers to the place of work and the buildings erected by the artists on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, in which they lived and worked. The "Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt" ensemble has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 24, 2021. It consists of two sub-areas (main area, group of three houses) and also includes the Russian Chapel, which was built shortly before the artists' colony was founded.[1] The Mathildenhöhe is a hill on the edge of Darmstadt's city center and was the gardens of the Grand Ducal Court in the 19th century. This was redesigned in 1833 in the style of an English landscape park. The garden was named after Mathilde von Wittelsbach (of Bavaria). She was married to Grand Duke Ludwig III. married.
