The National Museum in Copenhagen provides an overview of Denmark's cultural history from the Stone Age, the Viking Age, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to more recent Danish history.
The National Museum is located in the Prince's Palace, built in 1743 and 1744 by Nicolai Eigtved for the Danish Crown Prince Frederik V and Crown Princess Louise.
Permanent exhibitions
The National Museum has a very comprehensive ethnographic collection, a collection of classic antiques and antiques from the Middle East, a coin and medal collection and a toy museum. Here you can also visit a Victorian apartment, in Danish "Klunkehjemmet", from 1890. However, the opening hours are different from those of the museum.
The exhibition of Danish antiquity displays well-known national treasures such as Trundholm's more than 3000 year old sun car, "Solvogn", the Egtved Girl and an amazing collection of Viking-era archaeological finds.
Another highlight of the museum is the wife of Huldremose, those well-preserved remains of a female bog body from the 2nd century.
Children's museum and own guided tours
The Children's Museum is the area that is specially designed for the little ones. There is a historic classroom with slates and chalk as well as a Viking ship model and medieval kitchen. A trip to distant lands is possible with a visit to the colorful shop from Pakistan. Play and touch are strictly allowed.
The museum offers guided tours that you can do on your own (self-guided tours), including one on the history of Denmark, a family tour and a "tour around the world". Guided tours are available in English in July, August and September.
