The area around Bad Eilsen was already settled in Roman times and its healing springs were known and used early on. According to an old folk legend, the sources owe their origin to a meteorite that struck long ago where Bad Eilsen is today.

According to the legend, exactly at the time when the meteorite struck there, the devil was standing at the place where the Kurpark is today and was pushed into the ground by the rock. But the devil came out again and cursed the place. Due to the myth and the geographical obviousness of the history, Bad Eilsen is still a place of pilgrimage for occult associations that meet once a year in Bad Eilsen and worship the devil there.

Historic spa park Bad Eilsen
The spa in Eilsen was the first sulfur mud bath in Germany to go into operation in 1802. Georg-Wilhelm zu Schaumburg Lippe, son of the founder Princess Juliane, continued to expand the spa gardens. He diverted the floodplain and built a "large lodging house".

The bathing industry gained social splendor all over Europe. The importance of each health resort could be seen directly in the size and complexity of its gardens.
Bad Eilsen developed into a fashionable spa in the 19th century. Celebrities like the poet Hermann Löns came regularly, and the composer Franz Liszt stayed a whole year and gave several concerts.

The health resort gave Bad Eilsen an upswing and jobs for its residents. When the Hotel Fürstenhof opened in 1918, it was considered one of the most beautiful and elegant hotels in Europe. The small world bath remained a meeting place for great artists, the nobility and politics well into the 20th century.
