The Tormühle is located right next to the Salzwedeler Tor. Both are absolute landmarks of the Hanseatic City of Salzwedel. The gate mill was one of the town's most important sources of income up to the end of the 19th century. On the one hand it was an inn and on the other hand the surrounding villages delivered their grain here for grinding. Today there is no sign above the entrance portal on the left and the lighting on the right. We couldn't stop there. Hopefully it won't be left to decay.

The Tormühle was first mentioned in a document in 1290. It belonged to the city and brought in considerable income. Various villages in the surrounding area were obligated to grind, they had to have their grain ground here. Milling continued into the second half of the 20th century.

Today the mill serves as a cozy restaurant.
