THE RAPP MONUMENT, Colmar
Dedicated to General Jean Rapp (1771-1821), this statue is the first public monument to Auguste Bartholdi, who was not even 20 years old when it was built in 1854. Originally exhibited on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, the statue was shown at the 1855 Universal Exhibition before being brought to Colmar in 1856. This colossal bronze statue was torn down in 1940 during the Nazi occupation. However, after the war it was restored and re-erected in 1948 on a plinth replica of the original. Today it dominates the square of the same name, which has been redesigned since the summer of 2000 and is now free of cars.
