In 1667 62 families of fishermen and boatmen in Kappeln refused to Detlev v. Rumohr on Roest the subject's envy to avoid serfdom. The Duke Christian Albrecht of Gottorf left the island (since 1866 peninsula) Arnis in the Schlei to the expellees from Kappeln for the planned foundation of a settlement. From the southwest end of the long street on which the old gabled houses of the smallest town in Schleswig-Holstein are lined up, an alley leads to the only hill on the island where the cemetery and church were built. 1669-73 collections of church architecture in Arnis were carried out throughout the Duchy. In 1673 the church, a modest half-timbered building that probably started three years earlier, was consecrated. Its three-sided east end, together with the south and west wall, was newly performed in brick in 1731; from the original building, the only half-timbered church in Angeln, only the north wall with the north door is preserved. She got her round-arched windows at the same time, with the large, two-part runed windows of the brick walls. The main portal in the south has been protecting a small vestibule since 1904. The bell tower, which was renovated in 1825 and has a slender octagonal tip, rises in front of the west end.

In 1668 the first houses stood in Arnis, and the building of a church was already being considered. The church was consecrated in 1673.

In the beginning the church was very modest, it wasn't even enough for a wooden floor. A simple table probably served as the altar at first. Only the pulpit, adorned with rich sculptures, gave the church interior a modest dignity at the inauguration. The north wall of the original half-timbered church is still preserved today.

At the Arnisser Friedhof you can have the life stories of former Arnissers told you on your mobile phone. As part of the European Cultural Heritage Year 2018, the life stories of the former Arnissers were researched on selected gravestones with funds from the State of Schleswig-Holstein and made accessible via audio files.
