Strausberger Platz with its two towers marks the beginning of the GDR boulevard Karl-Marx-Allee and its buildings in the sugar confectionery style. GDR's star architect Hermann Henselmann, who had also designed the distinctive towers of the Frankfurt Gate in the course of the Karl-Marx-Allee, had planned the course. If you stroll along the Karl-Marx-Allee, you can learn all about the history of the GDR splendor boulevard on numerous information boards.

Strausberger Platz, Berlin
Strausberger Platz is a large urban square in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain and marks the border with the Mitte district. It is connected to Alexanderplatz via Karl-Marx-Allee and to Platz der Vereinigte Nationen via Lichtenberger Straße. These two streets intersect in an oval roundabout at Strausberger Platz.

The construction site at Strausberger Platz was one of the starting points of the strikes against the increased labor norms in the GDR on June 16, 1953, and thus of the uprising on June 17, 1953.
The House of the Child housed apartments, a puppet theater, a kindergarten, a children's department store, and, on the top floor, a children's café bearing the sign "Adults only accompanied by children." The stair railings with fairy tale motifs were notable. The miniature animals that delighted the children have disappeared since the building's renovation in the 1990s.
The House of Berlin contained restaurants, cafés, and a bar on both the lower and upper floors. The two gatehouses each bear a large inscription on their west side, and the House of the Child bears a quote from Goethe's Faust II: "I would like to see such a crowd, standing on free ground with a free people."
