After Friedrich Wilhelm IV became King of Prussia in 1840, he commissioned the landscape architect and urban planner Peter Joseph Lenné to plan Berlin's urban development. One of the projects was the connection of the Landwehr Canal to the Spree. Lenné also implemented his ideas that the canal should also be an ornamental feature and the design center of a new city district.

The Luisenstädtischer Canal was built over a length of almost two and a half kilometers. It was opened in 1852, but never achieved any significant importance in water traffic. In 1926 it was filled in except for the Engelbecken and converted into a garden, which still makes the course of the canal visible today.

At the Engelbecken you will find many benches for a short break or the café with a large terrace, which is open daily.

A nice restaurant is located here by the small pond with an indoor area, which is also visited by many tourists.
