From the 1860s to 1950s, sternwheelers (stern wheelers) were the main means of transportation between the Yukon and the rest of the world. The SS Klondike I & II operated between 1929 and 1950 as a cargo ship on the Yukon River between Whitehorse and Dawson City. In 1967, the ship was designated a Canada National Historic Site.
