The earthwork consists of a semicircular rampart with an upstream trench. Inside are three recesses for the guns with dimensions of about 6x3 m recognizable.

This is a gun position of a southwest-facing battery of at least eight positions staggered in three rows. The positions had been built in 1794 by the Austrians against the advancing troops of Napoleon.

The so-called “Austrian Redoubt” between Blankenheim and Blankenheimerdorf is a gun emplacement from the time of the First Coalition War between France and the coalition of Austria and Prussia (1792–1797). A semicircular wall facing southwest with a ditch in front has been preserved to this day. The wall rises about one and a half meters above the site. Originally it was 85 meters long and 15 meters wide. In the middle the complex is now cut through by a feeder road to the B51. Behind the crown of the wall, a platform can be seen on the southern section. The entrenchments no longer included baskets that were open at the bottom and filled with earth.

The Blankenheimerdorf gun emplacement was the central and largest of a total of seven emplacements. They were staggered in three lines and faced Belgium, from where the French revolutionary army was advancing. Most of these gun emplacements can still be seen in the area today.
