Wet meadows are semi-natural habitats characterized by grasses, rushes, sedges and other herbaceous plants. They are located in river valleys, on lakes or in depressions, such as here in the headwaters of the Auersbach. Many plant species of wet meadows in nutrient-poor locations have developed special mechanisms to adapt to nutrient deficiencies. In order to be able to fully use the few nutrients they root through the soil intensively, form storage organs and have an internal nutrient cycle by relocating them back to storage organs close to the ground in order to be able to use the nutrients quickly in the coming vegetation period. The ecological functions of the landscapes shaped by water are primarily based on the plant cover that is closed all year round. In addition to a diverse flora, in addition to newts, toads, meadow birds, spring snails and butterflies, all six species of snakes native to Rhineland-Palatinate can be found.
