14 ferries cross the Kiel Canal and connect the two shores. The ferry passages are free for vehicles and passengers. Basis for the free crossing of the channel is the obligation of the German Reich to provide in the context of the construction of the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal (Kiel Canal) in the years 1887 to 1895 free transitions for the interrupted by the canal construction roads (general crossing law Principle of the principle of principle).
Due to the high volume of traffic in Brunsbüttel and Nobiskrug at Rendsburg two ferries are side by side in use. Between the Kiel districts Holtenau and Wik commutes a passenger ferry.
The ferries on the Kiel Canal are barges with a standard capacity of 45 tons and carrying up to eight cars. Two Voith Schneider propellers ensure good maneuverability. The carrying capacity of the ferries regularly used in Brunsbüttel is 100 tonnes. Up to 21 cars can be transported simultaneously.
The ferry captains must have a nautical patent. A deckhand helps them to load and unload the car ferry.
